Zoo and Children's Museum with the Widgas

Friday was a holiday. And being a holiday, it was the perfect opportunity to celebrate not being stuck in the dark, cold, windowless office with some friends from work and their kids. Illinois State Museum employees set loose upon the unsuspecting town of Decatur. We can bore you to death before you know what happened!

These first two are actually at the Children's Museum. Out of order, but cute to start off the post. Kel playing cashier at the grocery store.

At the zoo. I think that Kel was being a frog? Or a dinosaur? Chris, Stacey, can you remember?

Kel and Henry. Henry is almost two years younger than Kel, but they adore each other. Henry does not, however, adore having his photo taken. He stuck his tongue out in every picture!

Kel is trying to figure out this whole tongue issue.

As a huge and special treat, the train engineer asked Kel if he'd like to drive with him! He even got to announce, "All aboard!" over the speaker as we set off.

The carousel was a popular attraction for both boys. This was Henry's first ever carousel ride.

Petting a goat.

I had to post a couple of the adorable Sophie, Henry's baby sister. And also my sometimes walking companion when I do my lunchtime walk at the office.

Alan and Charlie come to visit

Alan and Charlie came to stay with us last week and we were able to play tourist and take them to all of the local Lincoln sites. Alan is Nic's best friend since they were in grade school! Alan and Charlie are Kellan's godparents. Here are some random excerpts from their visit.

More fun with Airblox in the backyard

We are having so much fun with the Airblox. One of the best and most creative toys that Kel's ever had. We spent another fun Saturday afternoon building castles and forts and boats and anything else that inspired our imaginations. Kel wanted me to take a few photos. The lump on his head was from an ice skating accident earlier in the day.

Nic's Birthday in St Louis

Nic celebrated his 52nd birthday this week. We went to St Louis to take in a Cardinals game and hit a few other sites in celebration. The weather was gorgeous and we had a wonderful few days away. Nic might almost have forgotten the whole "getting older" thing in the process!

These are out of order, but I love these two shots. Kel at the "Birds on Shirt" game the evening of Nic's birthday. What a view. And they even won. Just for Nic.

To start our mini break, we headed down into the Ozarks and visited Meramac Caverns. Uber hokey, but fun nonetheless. Something different.

Some days, eh? I just wanted a smile!

Pretty cave formations.

Kel at the cavern entrance.

On his birthday, Nic requested a trip to the Museum of Transportation. This was a super choice and I highly recommend a visit to any train, plane, or automobile fan. Heck, they even had boats!

This was up on a platform that overlooks the working rail tracks. We saw loads of trains go speeding by during our visit. You can stand up there and wave to the engineer who blows the whistle and waves back.

Nic loved this GM Road Train.

There was a tram to ride down to a mini railroad. Kel got to sit next to the driver, much to his delight.

Goofing around in an old caboose.

Standing in front of a big old steamie.

The boys riding on an old Chicago L train that runs here as a trolley. Very cool.

An old fire truck.

They had an excellent display of classic cars.

On Friday, we hit the St Louis Zoo. It was busy, but we had a great day out. I got to see my very favourite lemurs in action and Nic's favourite tree kangaroos were moving about as well. Kel got to ride the train over and over again. Everybody went home happy.

Riding the zoo carousel.

Boys on the zoo train.

Horrible photo (end of a long, hot day at the zoo), but the only one of me from the trip. So, here I am!

Take me out to the ball game...

One of our favourite summer past times is driving up to Peoria to catch a Chiefs game, particularly when it also happens to be a fireworks game. There is something special and nostalgic about the grounds, the team, the crowd. Its nothing like fighting the throngs of fans, the expense, and the chaos of a Cardinals game in St Louis. This reminds me of old time baseball. The stewards are friendly and fun, they take you to right to your seat, the concessions are affordable, the grounds are well maintained, and there is a good old fashioned family atmosphere. I am not a baseball fan, but you can drag me to a Chiefs game any day.

The team was wearing pink jerseys on Saturday as a breast cancer fundraiser.

I love this photo of Nic. In his element.

Kel got a balloon hat. It was called a "Super Cool Alien Dude". Indeed.

One of the best parts of this field is the playground. I don't know many young kids who will sit through a full nine innings, and I don't know many mothers who love walking aimlessly around the baseball park with a bored child (visions of the Cardinals game next week looming). This playground is so much fun for the kids and I'm still able to enjoy the game from here.

A few shots of the fireworks from the end of the game. Just for fun.

Old Capitol Art Fair

It was Art Fair weekend again. Already? We stopped by on Saturday, en route to the Highland Games, so that Kel could make a few grabs in the Children's Tent. Then went and spent a large part of the day on Sunday -- with even more Children's Tent treasures since Sunday is "unlimited" (you can only choose three things on Saturday). Kel got some super new works for his room, some really nice and favourite artists. There are a few artists that he goes back to year after year. Its a really special experience.

This little "mural" is across from Dell's Popcorn. A favourite stop in our Art Fair wanderings. Their caramel corn is simply the best in the town!

Kel on the steps of the Old State Capitol.

We met up with Carmen and Connor. The kids had so much fun running circles around each other and listening to the live music while enjoying their popcorn and lemonade shake ups.

Back at the Capitol building It was a very bright day. I had some ideas about great composition with the building as background, but they all involved poor Kel looking into the sun. So it didn't happen. I just snapped a couple of shots.

Fun in the Airblox

We have a new toy for the backyard, the absolutely awesome Airblox. These things are so much fun! Yesterday we built a house, a ship fort, and an airplane. We had been considering a play house for the backyard, but I'm so happy that we went this way instead. Not only are they easy to store (we don't have a lot of space), but they make hundreds of different "forts" and should avoid the fate of boredom. I also noticed that when we were playing inside of the forts, it made a pretty cool backdrop for some photos, so here you go.

These are a few from outside. This was the tower in his ship fort. You had to crawl through a tunnel to arrive at the tower. I opted to go out the front door instead.

Sunday at the (Mini) Golf Course

I had my hands full (of kids!) today. I took Kel and some buddies to the mini golf course and then out for lunch. We lasted about 4 hours and then I, um, I mean, the kids, were tired and ready to pack it in. Besides, we still had our Sunday afternoon swim to come!

I only got a few photos -- in between carrying golf clubs and retrieving balls and refereeing tricky shots. It was a super day out.

Group shot: Elsa, Elizabeth, Rowan, and Kel.

The only other time that I got Kel to stand still enough for a photo!

Elizabeth and Elsa. Super sweet.

Spring Break in the Smokies

We spent this year's spring break on a gorgeous trip to the Smoky Mountains and eastern Tennessee. The scenery was beautiful, the weather was perfect, and it was just the relaxing break that we all needed. There was so much to do, so much to see, and we can't wait to get back again soon.

First stop on the trip was neither beautiful, nor scenic, but we hit the Children's Museum in Indianapolis to break up the driving on our first day. Kellan loves this place. Unfortunately, it was spring break for the kids of Indy, as well as being an absolutely freezing cold wet day, so it seemed that the entire city had the same idea. Still, Kel had a great time. I just didn't get many photos...

Here is Kel working on the paleontology dig down in the dinosaur exhibit.

First night in our cabin was freezing! Kel had to sleep in his winter hat. I am happy to report that we were warm and toasty in our sleeping bags, but the hat prevented chilly ears. And after that night, all was well with the weather gods and we had gorgeous temperatures for the rest of the trip. Thank goodness.

Here are some snaps of Kel and Mickey waking up in the top bunk on our first morning. Kel loved the cabin experience.

Swinging on the patio. We spent a lot of lovely evenings here on the swing.

Our cabin was right next door to Patriot Park, literally, beyond our cabin was park. This sign was at the far side, the street entrance.

On our second day in Tennessee, we hit Dollywood! Oh yes, it was awesome! When you grow up down the street from Disney, these southern parks are a real treat. Such a family friendly and country feel. And without the insanity of the crowds and tourists. The sign says, "We're glad you're here" and you know, during the course of our visit, we really felt that they were!

And there is a full size (huge!) steam engine here. Pulls you right up the mountin in a beautiful five mile loop ride.

Kel got to drive his own car! Many times. No Autopia impossible to push pedal here. Much better idea. He could steer, but the car moved on its own.

Where they put water in the steam engine.

The engine is behind him. Glum face is due to being tired. Mid-afternoon, super hot day, and so much fun stuff to do!

We had one rainy day on the trip and went to Wonder Works, otherwise known as the "uskidown house" to Kel. Fabulous and huge cross between a science and a children's museum. Super. Didn't get many photos because it was quite busy, as was Kel!

There was an afternoon break in the rain, so after Wonder Works we hit the mini golf course. Kel's first time. And something which has now become a bit of an obsession.

It got hot at some point. The shirt came off. Briefly.

The course was called "Fire House Golf" and there was an old firetruck out front. The boys are posing, sort of.

In the evening we decided to head for the Aquarium of the Smokies in Gatlinburg. This place was incredible. We spent hours admiring the wonderful exhibits. Definitely a must see if you're in the area.

You're supposed to be able to see the "Aquarium of the Smokies" sign behind him. Yeah, well, it was raining and I just took a quick snap, ok?

I found this saw tooth guy amazing. There were quite a few of them in the shark tunnels. They would just sit on top of you.

There were cute fish tanks that kids could "get inside", climb up through the middle and be surrounded by the aquarium world.

This one's for you, Uncle Patrick!

Aren't they the cutest fish ever? Love these.

Seriously never seen anything more horrifying. Had to photograph it for historic preservation.

At Kel's insistence -- Dory!

Ok, sorry, indulge me. The jellyfish were gorgeous!

The next day, we went back to Dollywood. Can't get too much of a good thing, right?

The boys on the bumper cars.

We waited for a nice day to head into the mountains, but even on a nice day, this is what the mountains were like when you got any distance into the National Park. I guess that's why they call them the Smoky Mountains, eh?!

Another day, another round (or eight) of mini golf.

He says that he is going to be a "golf man" when he grows up. This is a serious obsession.

On Easter Sunday, it was time to begin the trek home. We started in Knoxville, at the Tennessee River, where we rode the Three Rivers Rambler steam train. It was the Easter Bunny Express on this day and we had so much fun.

The riverfront is beautiful, an immense park and river walk. Not sure how far it goes. We exhausetd ourselves and didn't see much of it!

The whistle was loud!

My cheeky boys. I do so love them.

The train stopped at a park and the kids were greeted by the Easter Bunny! What excitement. The stop ended with an easter egg hunt in the park. And then even more candy was delivered by the conductor when we were back on the train.

We ended our trip in Nashville, then drove home to Springfield. We arrived in Nashville late on a rainy night, and departed first thing next morning, so the last of our photos are from this hot sunny beautiful Easter Sunday in Knoxville. And that seems just about right to me. It was perfect, start to finish.

Back in good health

What a week we've had here! Kellan was down with the flu for a full five days with a fever so high that he was unable to function (and we were in a constant state of panic). Today the fever broke. At last. In a matter of hours, he was transformed from a lump on the sofa to a happy and healthy boy playing outside in the beautiful spring sunshine. Kids are amazing. I took a few cheery shots outside to celebrate the miraculous recovery.

Love this look. My little big man.

Hockey Night

Saturday nights are Hockey Night. If there's a game on, we head up to Nelson Center and cheer on the Springfield Jr Blues. Here are some shots of the boys at the park before the game last night and then, just for fun, I took a few during the game. Happened to have the camera with me since we'd just been at Carmen's birthday party.

Some black and whites at the park

Enjoying Carmen's birthday party

We had a wonderful evening at the Pizza Machine to celebrate Carmen's 5th birthday (and Connor's 3rd birthday). Here are a few shots of Kel enjoying the cake and games.

Kellan's 5th Birthday Party

It was another YMCA swim party for Kellan this year, another two hours of friends and fun, of cake and swimming. Happy birthday, Kel!

Kellan and Caden before we headed out to the pool.

A pool full of friends. What more could you ask for?

My two boys goofing around in the pool.

Kellan having a ride on Mark's back.

The always sweet Elsa.

Olivia.

There were a lot of kids in the pool!

Maddox.

Carmen refused to let me get a photo, so I had to sneak this one while she wasn't looking.

Lleyton and Hank having a battle with the float bars.

Silly Dominic.

Dressed again and time for cake. Gannon's arm can be seen pointing at Kel's very cool Lightning McQueen cake.

The candle is lit and the singing begins. Punctuated at one point by a popping balloon, which Kellan found hilarious.

"Happy birthday to you..."

Make a wish!

Our handsome 5 year old boy.

A funny side effect of the race track on the cake was that everybody ended up with black mouths! Here are Olivia and Charlotte showing off their gorgeous cake faces.

Definitely the mark of a good party. Happy messy faces.

Birthday morning present time

I didn't manage to get decent shots of all the gifts, but here are a few of his big ones. The gift this year was a G scale train set (the engine actually steams!!!) and a trolley to go with it (he is obsessed with trolleys).

Another big gift was the Geotrax airport.

Here is his cheeky, "Fine, take my picture!" face. This was a big gift from Daddy, a slot car racing set that they've been playing with endlessly...

Five Year Portraits

We are technically a week early, but we had the time and so here they are. Kel's five year portraits. He was very cooperative if you consider the fact that it was 24 degrees outside when we did these!

Happy 200th Birthday, Abe Lincoln!

Kellan learned all about Abe's birthday at school today and, when we got home, he wanted to bake cupcakes in celebration. I still contend that he simply has my, "Any excuse for cupcakes!" attitude towards life, but hey, we sang happy birthday and did our best to celebrate the man in the portrait there. While enjoying the cupcake experience, of course.

Watching the cupcakes bake. Why do they take so long???

The almost finished product. They are just done cooling now and we're about to frost.

He said, "Do you want to take my picture?" and struck a pose. So I did.

An afternoon at the sled hill

We had a good dump of snow last week, as well as a Friday off of school (and thus work), so decided to hit the sled hill. Yes, that would be the sled hill. As in, the only hill around. Still, looking on the bright side, at least we have a sled hill, right?

PS -- part way through the afternoon, Kel got his hat soaked. Being the perfect mother that I am, I gave up my own hat (it was cold!) so that his little head didn't freeze. The photos are in no particular order here, so sometimes he's wearing his blue hat, and sometimes my hat. In case you wondered.

Yes, this is a frozen pond. Well frozen. No chance of falling in. I promise.

Wipe out! Possibly the one that resulted in our hat trade.

After a couple of hours sledding, Kel decided that he wanted to play at the park. Yes, play at the park on a bitterly cold January day. I may not be a Midwesterner, but I fear that my son does indeed belong here. Weirdo.

Random San Diego happiness

Just some shots from our activities of the past couple of days, otherwise known as the "post-Disney recovery period".

Hot sunny days on the water are the best way to spend time in January. Wouldn't you agree? The schools in Springfield were closed on this particular day because it was too cold. They closed the schools for cold. And look at us.

Back on good old "Number 41" (ie The Midway).

I don't think that the lady in the pink shirt has really got her heart in this game.

While out on the seaside, its always nice to go for a ride on the carousel.

Most beautiful skyline in the world. Hands down. My home town.

Few more from the Midway (I'm too lazy to go back and change the order right now!).

These are from the Hawk Watch at the Ramona Grasslands wildlife preserve. Fantastic experience.

DISNEYLAND!!!

Yes, it does indeed deserve all caps. We were lucky enough to spend two full days at both Disneyland and California Adventure this week. What fun! It gets more enjoyable each year, as Kellan grows into the rides. This year he told me, "Mommy the rides are fun this year! Last year they had more scary rides". Same rides, different (older) boy. We had an incredible two days. I am missing it already.

We started the adventure at California Adventure.

They drained the lagoon! You do pay a price for going in the off season. But it is a price worth paying for the lack of lines or crowds.

The real Lighting McQueen.

Grandma (well, half of Grandma!) and Kel on the carousel. One of many carousel rides both here and at Disneyland itself.

We had such fun at California Adventure. Kellan and Grandma.

Disneyland!!! Day one.

Ice cream (and coffee) break.

I love Dumbo!

Kellan got this monorail toy at Disneyland and we couldn't get it out of the box. It was well screweed in. Luckily the concierge had a screw driver and was quite friendly about taking EIGHT screws out of our toy, one by one.

A special family dinner at the Old Spaghetti Facotry in Fullerton.

Sunrise from our hotel in Ahaheim. Yes, I saw sunrise. You try sharing a room with this lot and sleeping in!

Funny, funny, funny story. And, yes, I know that I'll have to delete these when he gets a bit older. I was in the shower when Mom and Amanda called me out. This is how we found Kel. Early morning commute time. Exposing himself to the world. That's my boy.

We made Disneyland opening on day two. Here is the crowd, ready to go. We were "rushing for Nemo". Kel's words. Also my words!

Kel's very first ever trip on Nemo! Ours too. Fun ride. He loved it.

The Casey Jr train. He still loves this one.

Yeah, rockets!!!

Kel and Grandma on the Autopia.

Riding the train when we were all too tired to walk any further.

Indeed. I am related to all of them. By blood.

Look at the eyes on that boy. TIRED.

Last ride before home time. The carousel. Again.

You can see me and Amanda in the front seat on Space Mountain. I was just about to turn off the flash on the camera when this "preview" disappeared (the flash kind of washed it out). I tried. Oh well. Love this ride.

Some random sunshine

We had a "quiet" day today (the Evans version of quiet -- you know me and Kel!). I had the camera. Obviously.

Too much of a good thing? Never!

And so we were back at Seaworld again today. If you had a Seaworld pass, a sunny hot day, and an empty schedule, where would you go? I thought so!

We took the Skyride across the bay today as a special treat. The view was gorgeous. The mountains on one side, the city to our south, and behind us, the Pacific Ocean, as far as the eye could see. Not to mention one very happy Skyride loving boy.

We also managed to get into some of the aquariums that we'd missed so far this trip. There is so much to see and do at Seaworld. Things like the aquariums get left until last, but he loves watching the fish and naming his favourites.

For me, there is no contest. I love the cow fish. He even came to give me a big smooch!

We brought handfuls of quarters today for Kel to use in "shooting" people. You put a quarter in, wait for the next raft to round the corner (on the Shipwreck Rapids ride), and then soak the heck out of the unsuspecting riders. Kel always adds a friendly little wave after the drenching. Just to rub it in.

Grandma and Kel back on the spinny ride.

Wild Arctic is chilly. There is real ice! Not that we'll be strangers to that after our dreaded return to the Midwest next weekend.

Some more, "Hey, there's a whale behind you -- smile!" shots.

In the end, he just gets cheeky.

One of the signature Anheuser-Busch Clydesdales. Huge.
